Child Abuse

84 percent of prison inmates were abused as children.

One in three girls and one in five boys are sexually abused by an adult at some time during childhood.

Families with four or more children have higher rates of abuse and neglect, especially if their living conditions


More than 80 percent of abusers are a parent or someone close to a child


One out of ten babies born today are born to mothers who are abusing drugs.

In 2005, 12.1 of every 1,000 American children, almost 900,000 in all, suffered abuse by adults, with parents of victims accounting for almost 80% of abusers.

Every day, about four children die in the U.S. because of abuse or neglect, most of them babies or toddlers.

Abused children are more likely to abuse alcohol and become addicted to drugs, and one third will later abuse their own children.
